Last week I met Rod Johnson at SpringIreland. During a brief discussion we talked about SpringIDE and Spring's relationship with Eclipse. Today at EclipseCon, SpringSource made a full announcement of the SpringSource Tool Suite.
The toolsuite will build on Eclipse Mylyn and has the Spring IDE plugin as a core component. The embedded use of Eclipse Mylyn eases the development of large Spring-powered applications and incorporates other key features, such as issue tracking and code quality analysis tools.  The result is easier maintenance and a streamlined lifecycle for Spring-powered applications.

The SpringSource Tool Suite is the only enterprise application development suite that provides Mylyn’s task focus, tool integration and workflow streamlining benefits.  Its unique technology relieves information overload for developers working on large applications and increases productivity by identifying only the information relevant to the task at hand. The comprehensive SpringSource Tool Suite builds on the success of Eclipse, Mylyn and Spring IDE, simplifying the large aggregation of tools used to develop complex enterprise Java applications, dramatically reducing information overload and streamlining developer workflow.

“The combination of Java, declarative XML, AOP, and the advanced language mechanisms of the Spring Portfolio already dramatically reduces the complexity of enterprise Java development,” said Rod Johnson, founder and CEO of SpringSource. “The SpringSource Tool Suite will give developers even greater ability to seamlessly and effortlessly harness the power and simplicity of Spring.”

For newcomers to the Spring Framework and the Spring Portfolio, there's tool-guided assistance through tutorials and walk-troughs that integrate training materials. For seasoned experts, Architecture Review Tools can be used to ensure SpringSource best-practices and integrated support tools make it easier to get resolutions to incidents.

Additional SpringSource Tool Suite features include:

  • Spring Development Tools for intelligent editing, validating and navigating support for Spring application blueprints
  • Mylyn Task-Focused Interface for Java artifacts and Spring configuration files
  • Spring Framework Showcases explaining and highlighting new features in Spring Framework 2.5
  • Task-Focused Tutorials guiding the developer through the various products in the Spring Portfolio
  • Runtime Error Analysis adding explanations and solution suggestions to Java stack traces

“Tasktop’s partnership with SpringSource has produced novel tool support that makes it much easier for developers to manage the complexity of enterprise Java applications,” said Mik Kersten, president of Tasktop Technologies and creator of Mylyn. “We have not only integrated the Task-Focused Interface to support the Spring Portfolio, but have extended its reach to training and best practice materials. There is no other tool suite that provides this kind of ease of use for getting up to speed on the Spring Portfolio.  Just as the power of Spring has simplified the implementation of enterprise applications, the SpringSource Tool Suite simplifies the development and maintenance of those applications.”

In related news, SpringSource has also joined the Eclipse Foundation and will utilize the company’s engineering excellence to aid in the development of the Eclipse ecosystem.

“SpringSource is a significant innovator in enterprise Java, and we are appreciative of their contributions and involvement in the Eclipse community,” said Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of Eclipse Foundation, Inc. “SpringSource currently demonstrates leadership in multiple Eclipse-based products such as the SpringSource Tool Suite, and we welcome their membership in the Eclipse Foundation.”
