Daily Dose - Bob Lee Won't Support the Java SE "Charade"

  • submit to reddit
This week, Bob Lee, who is best known for leading JSR-330 (Dependency Injection for Java) and creating Guice, declined an invitation to participate in the Java SE 7 and 8 expert groups.  The decision was tough, but he made it in response to Oracle applying additional licensing restrictions to the recently announced JSRs.  He said that "in spite of and because of my commitment to Java" he couldn't contribute to Java SE with all of its licensing restrictions.  With JSRs having these restrictions in an open standards body, Lee says: "I can't support such a charade."

Microsoft Accused of Cheating on SunSpider
An anonymous hacker claiming to be a Mozilla Engineer says that Microsoft has been "cheating" the SunSpider benchmark by tweaking their IE9 JavaScript engine to perform really well just for that benchmark.  Of course, if you didn't know by now, benchmarks themselves are not free of bias in the way that they examine performance.  Since so much weight is placed on the SunSpider benchmark, software and hardware designers are bound to optimize their tech for that benchmark.  In other news, Microsoft just released IE9 Preview 7.

The thing is that Microsoft didn't cheat the benchmark. Dead-code analysis shows that the benchmark function was dead code and there was no point in running it, so Chakra didn't. That has real value in real-world sites, not just an artificial change to help a benchmark score. Here is the link to the IE teams blog where they refute the charge.

I thought the accusation sounded a little fishy myself.
